Moderator,
this is my blog which I've been adding to throughout this coursework. The music magazine I've made is in the hip-hop/alternative genre.
Below you'll find my finished music magazine cover, contents page and double page spread as well as the evaluation questions, research and planning, college magazine and the tasks I had to do before creating this.
My blog will start with my finished college magazine, go on to the evaluation, then research and planning and finally my college magazine.

Research and Planning: Music Magazine Analysis

Genre: The genre of the magazine this contents page is taken from is alternative rock, this contents page emphasises this genre through the use of images, text and layout. The magazine language is also very 'chatty' and involves the reader "Diddy's down the front having a bit of a mosh (no, seriously)" this links into the target audience's age and class.
Target Audience:
-Age
The target audience for this magazine would be 16-25 years old.
-Gender
They'd be mostly male although some females would enjoy reading it, I know this because of the manly colours used (black, red and white).
-Occupation
Most of the readers are full time students, this is evident because of the target age of this magazine. However, some may have part-time work or could have left education and be working.
-Class
I feel this magazine is aimed at middle - high class kids, this is shown through the 'common' type of music which this magazine shows.
-Interests
music, gigs, partying. This is shown through the stories this magazine chooses to publish and the age and class of the people targeted. Gigs: is shown via. the article 'The Weeks Best Gigs'. Music: it's a music magazine. Partying: it's aimed at people aged 15-25.
Layout: The layout of this contents page is bold and eye-catching, there is one large image which is linked to the main article in this magazine. This main story also has a paragraph, written in big font, underneath the image. This makes that particular story stand out from the rest which are written in much smaller font down the right hand side of the page, categorised into different subheadings: NEWS, RADAR, REVIEWS, LIVE!, FEATURES. These subheadings make finding a particular article easy.

Research and Planning: Magazine Analysis (Double Page Spread)

Genre: The genre this double page spread was taken from is also an alternative rock magazine. You can tell this because of the artists this story is about and the type of image used along with the accompanying text.
Target Audience:
-Age: The target audience for this magazine would be 16-25 years old.
-Gender: I think this is once again mainly aimed at males however this is more gender neutral as the colours used aren't too masculine and are more neutral
-Occupation: Once again I think the target audience is mainly students however I do believe this double page spread is a lot broader than both the contents and front cover, this is because it's a lot simpler and cleaner
Layout:
The layout of this double page spread is very clean and simple, the main image takes up a full page and spills over onto the second page whereas the story only takes up roughly 2/3 of the second page. This means the reader won't be overwhelmed with text when first viewing the page. The main colours used are neutral and don't overpower the image and text, however the splashes of blue across the two pages make the story eye catching and not too boring.

Research and Planning: Categorising my Target Audience

Age:
- The age of my target audience is around 15-25 years old.
Gender:
- My target audience will be mainly male, but there will be features of the magazine to attract female music lovers, I could reach this characteristic of my target audience by using 'boy-ish' colours and images, but also include content which will entice a female to want to buy this magazine.
Occupation:
- For the most part, I think most of my audience will be in full time occupation and may have part-time or Saturday jobs, I could put an article which links to student life and give information about part-time jobs.
Class:
- My target audience is working - middle class.
Wealth:
- As my target audience is working - middle class, they won't be rich, but they'll have enough money to buy a monthly magazine for a reasonable price.
Interests:
- My target audience's interests will be music, obviously, but also:
  • Gossip - they'll like to read about what is happening in the music world. E.g. Break-ups etc.
  • Gigs - a large part of my magazine audience will go to gigs and festivals, I think they'd like to read about up and coming music events.
  • Partying - seen as the target audience's age is 15-25 they'll obviously be partying a lot and socialising with friends.
  • Getting the newest music - young people always like being the first person to have something, and they're the same with music, a huge percentage of my audience will probably download new music in hope to get it before their friends. In my magazine I should have a page on new, up-and-coming bands and maybe a coupon to download a new song.
Outlook for Future:
- I think most of my audience will either stay in full-time education (university), go into the music industry (in bands etc.) or go onto small jobs. (McDonalds) I could reach my target audience's wants for their future by putting an article about part-time jobs, the best universities specialising in each interest of the audience, for example music universities etc. and an article on music agencies.

Research and Planning: Magazine Analysis (cover)

Genre: The genre of this magazine cover is alternative rock and the colours, images and text used make this clear. It's also a very masculine through the colours used and the type of language displayed on this, the first page the audience will see.
Target Audience
Age: I believe the main ages this magazine is targeted at is between 16-25
Gender: Due to the language, images and colours used on the front cover the target audience is generally males
Occupation: Most of the target audience are likely to be students although some may have left education and be working
Class: This magazine is aimed at working - middle class people because of the type of music that the magazine is based upon
Interests: The target audience is obviously going to be interested in music, because it's a music magazine, but more specifically older music and new music. They're also going to be interested in gigs, this is evident as one of the magazines stories is 'on tour with Coldplay'
Layout
The layout of this front cover is eye catching and busy, there's one main image (guy with the guitar) which takes up the majority of the page and then a smaller picture in the bottom right which occumpanies a story also situated in the bottom right hand corner '200 Things You Didn't Know About The Beatles'. The main story is a lot bigger than all the other text on the front cover and stands out well. The page is well set out and doesn't look too cluttered but also doesn't leave to much space.
