Evaluation: Question 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product? Why?

This is a drawing of someone who could possibly be in my target audience because of his age, music interest and general interest. His age matches as my music magazine is aimed at people between 16 - 26, he likes rap, hip-hop and alternative music and this is the music my magazine will deliver stories and information on. His general interests may also be included in some stories in my magazine as the artist which create this kind of music are also in to the same lifestyle and activities.

Evaluation - Question 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I believe the photo of my model and the photo of the model on NME's front cover bare some similarities but, however are quite different. The main difference being which page they're situated on, my photo (on the left) is on my contents page and is in this position as I wanted a picture in which I could write a short segment from the story above on my contents page. Whereas the photograph on the right is on the front cover and therefore tells us the main story in this magazine is probably about him, the other stories on this front cover are smaller and are fitted around the shape of the models face. My stories, however, are all down one side but both mine and NME's stories are on top of the photo of the model and aren't fitted around the face. The hair style of my model and NME's model are also similar, long brown and brushed over to the same side. This long, messy hair adds a rugged and more realistic look as appose to a staged and un-natural look of short, styled hair. The close up of the faces is another similarity between the two photographs, I chose a close up to ensure the reader sees the models laid back and relaxed facial expression, and by the facial expression of NME's model they've used a close-up to emphasise his facial expression also. Another similarity is the purple T-shirt they've both got on, even though you can only see the top, the T-shirt makes them both look relaxed and as-if they haven't made much effort for the photoshoot, this is the look I was going for when taking the photographs for my magazine. 

Evaluation: Question 1 - In what ways does your magazine use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Use: I used the same kind of story and layout on the '11 breakthrough artists of 2011'. I liked the look and the way it was left aligned.
I also used the watch in the main picture as I thought this made the model look more affluent and fashionable and this is the look I was going for throughout my magazine. 
Develop: I used the same kind of font for the title of my magazine as this magazine, however I changed the size, colour and boldness.
I saw on this front cover the website for the magazine was displayed underneath the masthead on the front cover and I decided to put mine there, however I used a different font style, colour and didn't put it in italics.
Challenge: I took a different photo style, shot type and model pose in my magazine.
I also chose to put the masthead in front of my main photo instead of behind, like it is on 'Honey' I did this because as it isn't an already established magazine, if there is any chance my audience won't be able to read it properly then this could ruin my brand name straight away.
Another think I challenged was the putting a banner across the bottom of my front cover, this banner allowed more information to be displayed. It also gave me a chance to incorporate my colour scheme into the front cover again.

Use: I used the same style of title for the contents page, I liked the simple-ness of it and the clean look it gave this page.
I also used the black boxes with 'features' and 'this month' inside as I thought this was an effective way of breaking up the text and numbers on the left hand side.
Develop: I used the text box but changed the colour and position to suit my magazine better as the red stood out and made the page look too busy whereas the grey kept the page keep flowing and overall looked better.
The caption next to the picture on the contents page made the page look really good, I developed this by editing the style of the writing and the positioning. 
I also developed the banner at the bottom of the contents page, I changed the colour, font and size of the font in the banner, this fit my colour scheme better therefore creating a house style throughout my magazine. 
Challenge: I did a completely different photograph as i changed the shot type and lighting effects to fit my magazine more, I thought a close-up headshot would work better on my contents page as it would leave more room for the text.
I chose not to include any small images around the image as I thought this would overcrowd and over-complicate my contents page.
   

Use: I used the same text box style to make my text stand out further therefore not being confusing for my audience.
I used the same positioning for my image and also used the same style, where the same image goes all the way across both pages, I think this helps the double page spread flow instead of images being cut off by text boxes and other images. 
Develop: I also used a white title and positioned in the same place (top of left hand page), however, I changed the font and size of my title.
The text inside of the boxes is arranged into columns, as it is on mine. However I changed the colour and font on my interview story as I believed it looked better.
Challenge: The picture I used was entirely different, I used wide close up of my model, where-as this other magazine used a long shot.
I added page numbers onto my double page spread, this means my audience will be able to find the story they want to read easily using the contents page.
I didn't include a banner across the top of my double page spread as I think this makes the page look too cluttered and busy, as appose to mine which fits together well and doesn't look too overcrowded.

Research and Planning: Equipment

I used photoshop to design and produce my magazine cover, contents and double page spread. It was a vital programme throughout the project and I couldn't have produced a magazine anywhere near as professional looking without it.

I used flickr to upload pictures of my cover, contents and double page spread in one of the evaluation questions 

I used blogger throughout the project to show and explain my research and planning and progression when creating my music magazine.

I used prezi to display text and images in an interesting and different way instead of just writing it on my blogger.

I used a SLR to take all my pictures which I used in my music magazine

Research and Planning: Creating my Double Page Spread

 This is the original picture I took for my double page spread, the image is too yellow as artificial train lights were on when this picture was took.

 I changed the levels and colour balance settings on photoshop to change the colours to look a lot more natural and just better quality, I also cut out the picture of my model, copied and made it a new layer, then made the background blurry, this would make the lines in the background more subtle so when I put text over the top the text would be readable.

 I then added in my magazine name and the page numbers of my double page spread, I made this font size 9 as they only need to be small

 I then added a title in a font which looked like it had been drawn on, this added the young feel I wanted this page to convey.

I then thought how I could draw the audience in and make them want to read the double page spread story (interview) I thought if a added in something the model had said in the interview then maybe they'd think that was interesting and read on, so i added in a tagline.

I then added in who the interview was with as this would once again make the audience want to read it more if they were flicking through quickly.

Then I added the boxes the text would go in front of, this would make the text easier to read.

I then wrote in the interview/double page spread story, I used a white font in order to make it as easy to read as possible.

Next I imported the poloroid looking picture viewers I'd previously made in photoshop.

I then put in the pictures I wanted the borders to surround.

After a few more tweaks this was the final double page spread design.
